The hotel opens as the Grande Hotel Internacional, designed by José Luís Monteiro, architect of the neighbouring Rossio station.
It takes the name Avenida Palace. Counted among Europe’s finest hotels, it keeps a resident orchestra that plays during dinner.
Until this year, guests enter the hotel from Praça dos Restauradores.
The building is remodelled and enlarged several times; politicians, financiers, artists and churchmen figure among its guests.
In neutral Lisbon, the British see the hotel as a favourite base of German spies; a secret fourth-floor passage to Rossio station is rumoured.
With more than a century of history, the fully renovated palace remains one of the city’s historic landmarks.
