Earliest known record of Antwerp’s hospice, then called the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwgasthuis, beside the Church of Our Lady.
The hospice moves to the Elzenveld site, its traditional founding date as the Sint-Elisabethgasthuis.
The monastery buildings and chapel that now form part of the hotel are built.
The nursing service is reorganised and expanded to 24 sisters.
Calvinists plunder the monastery; order is restored in 1585 by Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma.
Under French rule the sisters are expelled; King William I readmits them in 1824.
The former monastery, until then the Elzenveld congress centre, is leased to developer Iret Development for restoration.
Botanic Sanctuary opens as Antwerp’s first five-star Superior hotel; Hertog Jan wins two Michelin stars seven months later.
