Fleeing bankruptcy, French wine merchant Daniel Nicholas Thévenon arrives in Britain with his wife Célestine and five pounds; he becomes Daniel Nicols.
Nicols founds the Café Royal, whose wine cellar is once considered the greatest in the world.
The café becomes the place to be seen, frequented by Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Max Beerbohm and later Virginia Woolf and Winston Churchill.
Frank Harris urges Oscar Wilde here to drop his libel action against the Marquess of Queensberry; Wilde refuses, with ruinous consequences.
The Café Royal becomes the home of the National Sporting Club.
The establishment is bought by David Locke.
The Café Royal closes; the Crown Estate grants a 125-year lease to the Alrov Group, owner of The Set Collection, in a £90 million deal.
After a £200 million restoration by David Chipperfield Architects with Donald Insall Associates, the building reopens as a 159-room hotel.
