Commissioned by the Gallia family beside the future Milano Centrale station and designed by Giuseppe Laveni and Aldo Avati, the building is completed.
Delayed by the slow progress of the station works, the official opening finally takes place.
The hotel quickly becomes a landmark for travellers, businessmen and the cultural and social elite.
Qatar Investment Authority buys the hotel for over €100 million; its hospitality arm, Katara Hospitality, launches a major renovation.
The renovation, overseen by the architecture firm Marco Piva, is completed.
