The building began as a guesthouse reserved for distinguished visitors of the Torlonia princes, whose palazzo stood opposite on Via Bocca di Leone.
The former Torlonia guesthouse is turned into a hotel. Its popularity with British travellers earns it the name Hotel d'Angleterre – in Italian, d'Inghilterra.
Franz Liszt, Hans Christian Andersen, Mark Twain and Henry James are among the hotel's guests; tradition also links its name to Keats, Byron and Shelley.
Ernest Hemingway, Elizabeth Taylor and Gregory Peck add to the guest list, keeping the hotel among the most fashionable addresses in Rome.
A first renovation remodels the whole fourth floor, reducing it from 21 to 13 larger rooms lit by hand-blown Murano glass chandeliers.
The renovated interiors are credited to architects Alessandro Pasini and Tomaso Piantini, with furnishings by Roberto Terrinoni under Countess Cristina Gotti Lega's art direction; the other floors follow in the same spirit.
The hotel belongs to the Starhotels Collezione portfolio and is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
