St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is founded on the site where the hotel now stands.
The Soviet authorities destroy the cathedral.
The five-storey Intourist hotel, designed by architect Alexey Shchusev, is built on the cathedral’s foundations.
The hotel is chosen to host a meeting of the three Allied heads of government, but the summit is later transferred to Yalta.
The hotel undergoes a first redesign.
A second redesign follows; around 2015 the hotel passes to Metro Holding management, which renovates rooms and restaurants step by step.
Since 1939 the hotel has welcomed more than 450,000 foreign travellers, politicians, diplomats and sportsmen, and hosted international conferences and forums.
