Architect Charles Fitzroy Doll builds the hotel, modelling its terracotta exterior on the Château de Madrid in Paris.
The Hotel Russell opens on Russell Square, with an ornate marble staircase and a sunken garden.
Doll’s dining room is said to be near-identical to the one he designed for the Titanic; a twin of the hotel’s bronze dragon sailed on the liner.
Unusually, the hotel escapes requisition by the War Office during the Second World War.
An air raid damages the rooftop dome, which is never rebuilt.
The hotel features in the BBC miniseries Kessler; it is also referenced in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats.
After a major renovation, the hotel reopens as The Principal London.
Following a change of ownership in July, it is renamed Kimpton Fitzroy London, operated by IHG and owned by Covivio Hotels.
