The Makedonia Palace opens, designed by Constantinos A. Doxiadis in a sober, visibly standardised modernist style.
During the opening of the Thessaloniki International Fair, the Greek Prime Minister and most of the cabinet stay at the hotel.
Guests have included Vladimir Putin, Chuck Norris, Faye Dunaway, Colin Farrell and Catherine Deneuve.
Owned by IKA, Greece’s social security fund, the hotel is run by The Daskalantonakis Group.

The building is a landmark of the New Waterfront (Nea Paralia), redesigned by Nikiforidis–Cuomo Architects.
