The Crusaders build a walled fortress on the site to protect the port city of Jaffa.
Under Ottoman rule the complex serves as a jailhouse, known as the kishle.
Sultan Abdul Hamid II erects the clock tower behind the prison; his seal still crowns the hotel’s entrance arch.
During the British Mandate and the 1948 war, the building is used as a British command post.
After decades as a police station, the property is bought by the Nakash family.
Feigin Architects and conservation architect Eyal Ziv restore the site with the Israel Antiquities Authority; digs uncover a horse skeleton from Napoleon’s campaign and 1948-era British guns.
