The hotel houses the Australian and New Zealand embassies and the Saigon bureaus of NBC, ABC and CBS, becoming a hub of the Vietnam War.
The Manifesto of the Eighteen, announced at a press conference here, becomes known as the Caravelle Manifesto.
A bomb explodes in room 514, on a floor of foreign journalists who are all out; nine rooms are damaged and several people injured.
From March 1972 to June 1973 the Australian Embassy Guard Platoon is stationed at the hotel.
After the fall of Saigon, the state takes over the hotel and renames it Độc Lập (Independence).
Following refurbishment, the Caravelle name is revived.
Phillip Noyce uses the Caravelle as a stand-in for the Continental in The Quiet American; the actors stay in its Presidential Suites, Michael Caine among the guests.
