The site is occupied by The Golden Talbot, an inn dating back to Elizabethan times and already called “ancient” in 1751.
The inn is demolished for The Royal Hotel, built by politician John Crewe and used by the party opposed to the Grosvenor family.
Earl Grosvenor, later 1st Marquess of Westminster, buys the hotel and renames it the Grosvenor Hotel.
The old building is replaced by the present hotel, the last major work of Chester architect Thomas Mainwaring Penson, completed after his death.
The hotel passes into the estate of the Dukes of Westminster when Hugh Grosvenor is created 1st Duke.
The building is listed Grade II.
Chef Simon Radley joins the hotel; its restaurant later holds a Michelin star for 30 consecutive years.
The Arkle restaurant is renamed Simon Radley at the Chester Grosvenor.
After a long closure during the COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant loses its Michelin star.
