A residence for the ruler of Ottoman Algiers is built on the site.
After the French conquest of Algiers, the mansion becomes a girls’ boarding school.
The building is converted into the Hôtel Saint-George, soon a favourite of British visitors.
Guests include Edward VII and Alexandra, Baron de Rothschild, Winston Churchill, Édith Piaf, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir.
Requisitioned by the US military, the hotel sees Admiral Darlan sign the ceasefire in its Salon des Ambassadeurs after the Allied landings.
General Eisenhower runs Allied Force Headquarters from room 141, preserved to this day; the invasion of Sicily is planned here.
Badly damaged by German bombing, the hotel reopens after repairs.
The hotel closes for remodelling; architect Fernand Pouillon adds two new wings.
It reopens as the Hôtel El Djazaïr, the Arabic name of both Algiers and Algeria.
