Architect Rodolfo Vantini builds a private villa for the Frizzoni family, a noble family from Bergamo with roots in the Grisons.
The partly finished villa is inaugurated for the birthday of Count Frizzoni’s wife.
The Société des Grands Hôtels buys the villa; architects Giovanni Ceruti and Ercole Balossi Merlo add a long building with two wings overlooking the lake.
The hotel opens as the Grand Hotel Bellagio.
The nearby Villa Serbelloni is acquired as a luxury annex of the hotel.
Swiss hotelier Arturo Bucher buys the property and modernises it; his family still owns it today.
Following the economic crisis, Villa Serbelloni is sold, but Bucher keeps the right to use its name, now borne by the hotel.
