Under King Ludwig II, architects Johann Kilian Stützel and Anton Roth build the neo-Renaissance Central-Säle, a ballroom venue.
Stützel buys out Roth’s share; the halls host debutante balls and are the first home of the Kaim Orchestra, forerunner of the Munich Philharmonic.
After the Stützel family sells, the building is divided into offices for a sewing-thread manufacturer.
Damaged in the Second World War, the building is renovated.
After its conversion into the Antique Haus antiques complex fails commercially, the building is lost to foreclosure.
Hotelier Georg Rafael, co-founder of Regent Hotels, opens it as the luxury Hotel Rafael Munich.
Mandarin Oriental buys the four Rafael hotels for US$142.5 million and renames the hotel Mandarin Oriental, Munich.
All 48 rooms and 25 suites are renovated.
Named to Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List.
The public areas are refurbished, with the opening of Matsuhisa Munich, Bar31 and a new lobby lounge.
