Isma’il sells the lodge to Frederick and Jessie Head, who discovered it on honeymoon and enlarge it as a private home.
Having bought the property in 1885, Ethel and Hugh Locke King open it as a hotel, named after Mena (Menes), founder of Egypt’s first dynasty.
The hotel opens Egypt’s first swimming pool and announces that it will now stay open all year round.

The hotel is requisitioned by Australian troops; they return in 1939 and it later serves as a hospital for wounded Australian soldiers.
The Oberoi Group takes over management and renames it The Mena House Oberoi; a major renovation follows, completed in 1975.
Egyptian and Israeli delegations meet at the hotel; the Mena House Conference paves the way for the Camp David Accords.
A 200-room garden wing is built.
With the Oberoi contract expired, the hotel becomes the Mena House Hotel, run by the Egyptian General Company for Tourism & Hotels.
Under Marriott management since 2015, the garden wing is renamed Marriott Mena House Cairo; the historic Palace wing closes for renovation.
