Developer Fausto Figueiredo secures a railway line linking Estoril to the European network, paving the way for the resort.
The hotel opens, designed in a neoclassical style by French architect Henri Martinet for Figueiredo.
Thanks to Portugal’s neutrality, the hotel becomes a refuge for exiled royalty and a meeting point for Allied and Axis intelligence agents.
Ian Fleming, then a naval intelligence officer, stays here while handling double agent Duško Popov, often cited as an inspiration for James Bond.
The cast of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service lives at the hotel; George Lazenby and Diana Rigg occupy suites, and scenes are shot by the pool, in the lobby and on the balconies.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is released, with the hotel prominently on screen.
A Royal Gallery opens honouring the royal families of Spain, Italy, France, Bulgaria and Romania who stayed at the hotel.
The hotel joins Historic Hotels Worldwide.
Guests have included the Duke of Windsor, King Carol II of Romania, Prince Rainier III, Grace Kelly, Orson Welles and Graham Greene.
