Schloss Friedrichshof is built to designs by court architect Ernst Ihne for the widowed Empress Victoria, named in memory of Emperor Frederick III.
Queen Victoria visits her eldest daughter at Friedrichshof and plants a tree in the park.
Tsar Nicholas II and Alexandra pay a day visit to the castle.
When the Empress dies, Princess Margaret of Prussia, Landgravine of Hesse, her youngest daughter, inherits the castle with all its contents, art and letters.
King Edward VII and Kaiser Wilhelm II meet at Friedrichshof.
After the war the American army uses the castle as an officers’ club; on 5 November the Hesse family jewels hidden in the cellar are discovered and stolen by US officers.
The thieves are imprisoned; only about a tenth of the stolen treasure is ever returned to the family.
The castle opens as Schlosshotel Kronberg under hotelier Richard Pertram.
A roof fire destroys the upper floors; the building is restored by Philipp Holzmann, the firm that had built it.
The interiors stand in for Sandringham House in the film Spencer.
