The site is occupied by the Villa Merlina, famed for its magnificent gardens.
After enlarging the Villa Merlina, converted by Augusto Guidini senior, Riccardo Fedele opens the Hotel Splendide.
Renovated by Paolito Somazzi, the 125-bed hotel becomes Lugano’s first hotel-palazzo, modelled on French Baroque châteaux.
The hotel quickly wins a loyal clientele of wealthy Europeans, who come mainly in summer.
The Fedele family sells the hotel to the Naldi family’s Italian hotel company; a new wing of 53 rooms follows.
Guests have included Igor Stravinsky, Arthur Rubinstein, Ella Fitzgerald, François Mitterrand, George H. W. Bush, Sophia Loren and Tina Turner.
A member of The Leading Hotels of the World, the Splendide Royal is regarded as Lugano’s leading grand hotel.
