A neo-Gothic, castle-like villa is built at Acquasanta for retired British admiral Domville.
Businessman Ignazio Florio junior buys the villa, planning a tuberculosis sanatorium, and renames it Igiea after Hygieia, the Greek mythological figure of health.
Under pressure from investors, Florio has architect Ernesto Basile turn it into a luxury hotel, inaugurated with Art Nouveau décor and frescoes by Ettore De Maria Bergler.
By the war years the property has fallen into decline.
Revitalised by Rocco Forte Hotels, Villa Igiea returns to life as a luxury hotel.
