A large private mansion is built, owned in turn by several noble families of the Comtat Venaissin.
1740
François de Boutin de Valouse buys the house and remodels it as a Classical hôtel particulier, a look it has kept ever since.
1775
Bought by Jean-Baptiste de Graveson, it becomes the Hôtel de Graveson.
1799
Widowed on 25 September, Catherine Pierron, owner of the Hôtel du Palais Royal opposite, buys the mansion and opens the Hôtel d’Europe; General Bonaparte stays on his way back from Egypt.
1830
Catherine Pierron hands the hotel to her son Narcisse, who proves a dynamic manager.
25 Sept. 1839
Victor Hugo arrives by boat from Lyon with Juliette Drouet and stays two days before leaving for Arles.
1854
With the arrival of the railway, Narcisse Pierron launches his own omnibus line between the station and the hotel, one of the first in Avignon.
1858
John Stuart Mill and Harriet Taylor Mill take up residence; she dies at the hotel on 4 November.
1893 – 1894
Jules Massenet rents seven rooms to work on the score of La Navarraise.
1904
A telephone line is installed; the Hôtel d’Europe is among the first three hotels in Avignon to be connected.
1942 – 1944
The German army requisitions the hotel from 19 November 1942 to 23 August 1944.
