Dwarika Das Shrestha sees carpenters cutting up a finely carved pillar from a demolished building for firewood, and begins rescuing Kathmandu’s old wood carvings.
The carvings first adorn a room let to a foreign master’s student; the interest they arouse inspires guest rooms built around traditional woodwork.
Shrestha sets up a restoration workshop to revive wood carving; it is still in operation, now reserved for badly damaged pieces.
The hotel takes more than three decades to build; Shrestha also revives dacchiapa, the Newari craft of carved bricks.
The hotel receives the PATA Heritage Gold Award from the Pacific Asia Travel Association.
Dwarika Das Shrestha dies; his wife Ambica Shrestha carries on his mission.
The hotel wins the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Culture Heritage Conservation for preserving Nepali architectural traditions.
Still run by the Shrestha family, now in its third generation, with the founder’s grandson Vijay guiding guests through the collection.
