A palace is built for Bartolomeo Scala, chancellor of the Florentine Republic, on land formerly owned by the Ospedale degli Innocenti.
Through Scala's daughters, who had become nuns, the property passes to Cardinal Alessandro de' Medici, the future Pope Leo XI.
When the cardinal is elected pope, the palace goes to his sister Costanza, wife of Ugo della Gherardesca; the family keeps it for nearly three centuries.
Domenico Belli's opera Orfeo dolente is first performed in the palace during Carnival.
Architect Gherardo Silvani carries out the first of the works that enlarge the palace.
Antonio Maria Ferri remodels the façade on Borgo Pinti and the south side.
After the city walls are demolished, Giuseppe Poggi designs a monumental entrance to the garden.
Former Khedive of Egypt Ismail Pasha buys the palace but soon sells it; it then passes to the Società Italiana per le Strade Ferrate Meridionali, a railway company.
The building is listed as a monument of Italy's national artistic heritage.
Acquired by the Società Metallurgica Italiana in 1940, the palace is restored under Piero Sanpaolesi and Raffaello Brizzi.
After conversion, the palace opens as the five-star Four Seasons Hotel Firenze.
