According to Florence's register of historic businesses, Swiss hotelier Giacomo Mosca founds the hotel.
The present building, in a sober neo-Cinquecento style, rises on the site of demolished Vecchietti houses; a shield on the façade bears the date 1894.
The reading room becomes a Liberty-style winter garden beneath an iron and coloured-glass canopy.
Around the turn of the century, guests include John Singer Sargent, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Luigi Pirandello, Eugenio Montale, Enrico Fermi, Igor Stravinsky, Giorgio de Chirico and Bertrand Russell; Eleonora Duse lives here for long periods.
The Biondi brothers' foundry makes the griffin-shaped corner lantern, modelled on the ironwork of Palazzo Strozzi.
After nearly a century, the Mosca family sells the hotel to Charming Hotels.
The hotel reopens after two years of restoration.
Starhotels buys the hotel; by 2019 the interiors are entirely redesigned by Genius Loci Architettura and the façades restored.
The hotel extends into the neighbouring former Banco di Roma palazzo, with interiors by Anouska Hempel.
An Iginio Massari pastry shop opens on the ground floor facing Via de' Vecchietti.
Following its expansion and renovation, the hotel welcomes guests again with 25 new Hempel-designed rooms and suites in the Bristol wing.
