The Jin Mao Tower, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill around the number eight, is officially dedicated.
1999
The tower becomes fully operational; the Grand Hyatt, starting on the 53rd floor, is then the highest hotel in the world.

A shoe salesman, Han Qizhi, climbs the tower barehanded and is arrested.
