A three-storey red-brick clubhouse is built on the site for the Shanghai Club, the leading British men’s club, founded in 1861.
Former US President Ulysses S. Grant is received at the club during his visit to Shanghai.
The old clubhouse is demolished. Its six-storey English Renaissance replacement is designed by H. Tarrant, then completed by A. G. Bray after Tarrant’s death.
The new Shanghai Club opens, with its 34-metre mahogany Long Bar on the second floor.
The club closes with the outbreak of the Pacific War; Japanese forces occupy the building until 1945.
Expropriated by the new government, the building becomes the International Seamen’s Club.
It is turned into the Dongfeng Hotel.
The building houses Shanghai’s first KFC restaurant.
Hilton leases the building and begins its conversion into a luxury hotel.
The restored club reopens as Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund, the brand’s first hotel in Asia; the Long Bar is recreated from archive photographs.
