As Saint-Jean-de-Luz grows into a resort favoured by a large British colony, the Hôtel Terminus opens in the beach dunes at one end of the town.
Fire destroys the Terminus; it is entirely rebuilt as a larger, more luxurious hotel, later known as the Modern Hôtel.
The Modern Hôtel is sold; its upper floors become apartments and the restored hotel is renamed Le Grand Hôtel.
The Loreamar Thalasso & Spa seawater spa is added, a nod to the town’s old bathhouses.
Interior architect Patrick Ribes renovates the hotel with Art Deco inspiration.
The hotel closes on 30 September 2025 for a renovation by Studio MHNA for owner Groupe Elancia, and reopens in 2026.
