The hotel opens, founded by businessman Agustín Ibarra, owner of the Café Inglés, on Calle del Lobo, today Calle de Echegaray.
It is reputedly Madrid’s first hotel with its own restaurant, and one of the first buildings in the city lit by electricity.
Its lounges draw writers such as Clarín, Galdós, Valle-Inclán, Gabriel Miró and Virginia Woolf; the bullfighter “El Gallo” courts Pastora Imperio here.
After almost five years of restoration, the hotel reopens with Art Deco interiors designed with the Rockwell Group.
Ranked number one on TripAdvisor three years running.
Awarded a Michelin Key, renewed in 2025.
Named in Condé Nast Traveller’s Gold List of the best hotels in the world.
