The palace is built for the Dutch consul Daniel Gildemeester, on land granted by the Marquis of Pombal.
After the consul’s death, his widow sells the estate to Diogo José Vito de Menezes Noronha Coutinho, 5th Marquis of Marialva.
The palace is enlarged into a symmetrical U shape, probably by architect José da Costa e Silva; the gardens are redesigned in the Romantic style.
A neoclassical triumphal arch, attributed to Francisco Leal Garcia, joins the two wings to honour the visit of Prince Regent John and Carlota Joaquina.
The Portuguese state acquires the palace, whose rooms keep frescoes attributed to Jean-Baptiste Pillement and his followers.
Seteais is classified as a Property of Public Interest.
The palace opens as a luxury hotel, its historic character preserved; it is run under the Tivoli brand from 1955.
The Cultural Landscape of Sintra, which includes Seteais, is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
After about 68 years under Tivoli, the Valverde group takes over under a 30-year state concession and plans a €22 million conservation programme.
