The English architect Herbert Baker designs a majestic colonial building above the bay of Lourenço Marques, as Maputo was then called.
The hotel is completed in the grand palace style and becomes a symbol of the city.
Diplomats, dignitaries and royalty fill its guest list during the years surrounding the war.
Carefully restored under Serena Hotels, it keeps its classic décor while adding contemporary comfort; the Polana Mar wing has been refurbished.
The building is included in the list of Mozambique’s built heritage.
