By legend, Inês de Castro, beloved of Prince Pedro, is murdered here on King Afonso IV’s orders; the Fountain of Tears is said to spring from her tears.
The estate serves as a royal hunting ground, then belongs to the University of Coimbra and to a religious order.
The Osório Cabral de Castro family acquires the estate and builds the palace; it remains in the same family ever since.
During the Napoleonic invasions, the Duke of Wellington stays at the estate; giant sequoias are planted to mark his visit.
A fire destroys much of the palace, later rebuilt in a different style by Miguel Osório Cabral de Castro.
The quinta is classified as a Property of Public Interest.
The palace is converted into a hotel.
A new wing housing the spa is inaugurated.
