The oldest parts of the castle date from this period; it is attributed to the bishops of Cahors, who will use it as a summer residence for some seven centuries.
The fortress guards Cahors against the English and roving bands of mercenaries.
Bishop Bardou buys the château and undertakes major works.
With the separation of Church and State, it becomes state property; it is sold to Dr Faure a year later.
Dr Faure’s daughters open a restaurant, the château’s first use open to the public.
Georges Héreil, president of Chrysler France, buys it and creates a gastronomic restaurant and seminar centre; he brings it into Relais & Châteaux.
After Héreil’s death, a court-ordered auction, with Alain Delon among the bidders, awards it to winegrower Georges Vigouroux, who revives the vineyard.
The restaurant regains its Michelin star.
