Commissioned by the Pommery family, the château is built on the Saint-Nicaise hill as an owner’s residence within the champagne house’s industrial estate.
The château is completed for Melchior de Polignac, grandson of Madame Pommery.
Henri Farman lands nearby at the end of what is described as the first city-to-city flight.
Partly destroyed during the First World War, the château is rebuilt identically in 1920.
It successively houses an RAF command centre, a Luftwaffe radio centre and a US Army rest centre.
The château serves as the private residence of the de Polignac family, at the head of the Pommery house.
The Gardinier family, who had lived there after the de Polignacs, converts the château into a hotel and haute cuisine restaurant; it later joins Relais & Châteaux.
